Genetic modification and genetic determinism

چکیده

In this article we examine four objections to the genetic modification of human beings: the freedom argument, the giftedness argument, the authenticity argument, and the uniqueness argument. We then demonstrate that each of these arguments against genetic modification assumes a strong version of genetic determinism. Since these strong deterministic assumptions are false, the arguments against genetic modification, which assume and depend upon these assumptions, are therefore unsound. Serious discussion of the morality of genetic modification, and the development of sound science policy, should be driven by arguments that address the actual consequences of genetic modification for individuals and society, not by ones propped up by false or misleading biological assumptions.

بررسی روابط ژنتیکی ارقام کلزا با استفاده از نشانگرهای RAPD

Limited geographic area and focused modification of rapeseed during of its breeding cases have been led to the limited genetic basis. So, the evaluation of genetic diversity in modern cultivars of canola to estimating and maintain of genetic resources is essential. In this study, the genetic diversity of 45 genotypes of rapeseed was investigated using 12 RAPD markers .Cluster analysis by Dice c...

The Fearless Vampire Conservator: Philip Kitcher, Genetic Determinism and the Informational Gene 1. Introduction

Genetic determinism is the idea that significant human characteristics are strongly linked to the presence of certain genes; that it is extremely difficult to attempt to modify criminal behavior or obesity or alcoholism by any means other than genetic manipulation. Recent discussion of human cloning has revealed how real a possibility genetic determinism seems to many people. Surveying this dis...

Teachers’ Conceptions About the Genetic Determinism of Human Behaviour: A Survey in 23 Countries

This work analyses the answers to a questionnaire from 8,285 in-service and pre-service teachers from 23 countries, elaborated by the Biohead-Citizen research project, to investigate teachers’ conceptions related to the genetic determinism of human behaviour. A principal components analysis is used to assess the main trends in all the interviewed teachers’ conceptions. This illustrates that inn...

Using the Genetic Algorithm based on the Riedel Equation to Predict the Vapor Pressure of Organic Compounds

In this paper, a genetic algorithm (GA) has been used to predict the vapor pressure of pure organic compounds based on Riedel equation. Initially, the coefficients of Riedel equation were optimized. Then, a new term was added to the original Riedel equation to reduce error of the model in prediction of vapor pressures of pure materials. 110 components at two different pressures (10 and 100 kPa)...
